`The Bulgarian participants we sent to the project “Don’t Look Up!” shared their inspiring experiences from Bergolo, Italy—here are some of their stories and moments!

Don’t Look Up! was more than just a youth exchange — it was a hands-on experience focused on one of today's most important topics: misinformation and fake news.

In a world where information spreads faster than ever, learning to spot what’s real and what’s not is essential. Through fun and interactive workshops in the scenic village of Bergolo, Italy, participants explored how disinformation is created, shared, and challenged.

Over the course of 10 powerful days, young people from across Europe gained digital skills, developed critical thinking, and embraced meaningful offline connections. Together, they reflected on how we consume and create media — and what it means to be informed, responsible digital citizens.

Here are some of the personal reflections from the Bulgarian participants who took part in this eye-opening journey:

Nikola Simeonov

When I first received the confirmation that I would be taking part in an Erasmus+ program in Bergolo, Italy, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had already heard stories of students traveling across Europe, making friends, and discovering themselves through cultural exchange. But nothing could have prepared me for the depth and intensity of the experience that awaited me.

A World Apart from Home
Bergolo is a tiny village nestled in the hills of Northern Italy. With its narrow stone streets, peaceful atmosphere, and timeless architecture, it felt like stepping into a dream—or a painting from centuries ago. Coming from a much livelier and faster-paced environment, the slow rhythm of life in Bergolo was both shocking and refreshing. There were no honking cars, no crowded sidewalks, and no towering buildings—only quiet, history-soaked walls, church bells, and the sounds of nature.

I quickly realized that this change of environment was more than geographical. It pushed me to slow down, reflect, and live more presently—something I didn’t even know I needed. Sharing daily life with fellow participants from different cultures helped me gain new perspectives, not just about others, but also about myself.

Team “DolceFarNiente” and the Anthropology of Art
One of the most meaningful parts of the experience came in the form of a project: an anthropological research assignment focused on the topic of Art. I was part of the group “DolceFarNiente”—a name that perfectly captured the Italian philosophy of enjoying life through stillness, reflection, and creative freedom.

Together with my team, we explored what art means in different lives and minds. Our main case study brought us to the nearby town of Cortemilia, where we visited a home for people with psychological disabilities. There, we conducted interviews and filmed our conversations with some of the residents.

This was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the Erasmus experience. It challenged my assumptions, pushed me far beyond my comfort zone, and gave me an insight into worlds I never knew. Despite the language barriers and the sensitivity of the setting, I found genuine human connection through the camera lens. The stories we recorded were honest, painful, beautiful, and deeply inspiring.

More Than a Trip
Erasmus+ in Bergolo wasn’t just a trip or an academic obligation—it was a transformation. It taught me to observe more, judge less, and listen deeper. It gave me a new appreciation for slowness, for creativity, and for people.

As I return home, I carry with me not only photographs and memories, but also a sense of growth I hadn’t anticipated. I am grateful for the chance to experience a different way of life, for the friendships I formed, and for the lessons that will stay with me long after the program has ended.

If you ever get the chance to go on an Erasmus+ exchange—especially one that seems "too far" or "too different"—don’t hesitate. Say yes. Let it change you.

This summer, I took part in an Erasmus+ project called “Don’t Look Up!” in the beautiful stone village of Bergolo, Italy. The project was centered around misinformation and fake news. We were offered workshops that explored how disinformation is created and shared. We learnt to spot false information, analyse sources critically, and understand online manipulation. Every session gave us tools to become more responsible and active consumers of media.

Of course, the project was also about connection, culture, and consciousness. They pushed us out of our comfort zones with a 100-hour digital detox. Our devices were literally locked away in a wooden chest, and we had to reconnect with the world around us and with each other. We had deeper conversations, created strong bonds, and got a real understanding of how much technology affects our daily lives.

What made this project truly special was the intercultural exchange. Participants from across Europe brought different perspectives, experiences, and stories. By the end of the project, I gained critical thinking, cultural awareness, and a renewed sense of what it means to be an active European citizen in today’s world. 10/10 would recommend.

This project for me started as a way to take break from my routine but it turned out to be so much more!

I`ve had expectations to meet different yet like-minded people, to have some peace and quiet in the nature to talk about AI and see some new perspectives but the things that surprised me the most was all of the little things we created togther. This place and the people in it felt like a real comunity. In my mind there always will be a special place for the two days which the fascilitators were reffering to as "The outdoor days" with some mystery. Imagine being put in an unknown town with the task to know more about it. I remember that all of our group felt excitement of surprise we forgot we could. The first village we were placed in was Gorzegno. It was really small but all of its buildings had stories to tell and fortunately for us some habitants had too. I will always remember the two sisters who had a restourant, the worker who have loved his village for his whole life and of course all of the people who were proud that they chose to live slowly.

Disconnection was a big part of this project. In spite of sounding frightening at first, I feel like it added up to thee sense of community most of us left this place. It gave us space to be more creative and social. The first night we didn`t have our phones, becouse of the lack of external entertainment, most of us started singing together. It was one of the most genuine moments I have expirienced.

In conclusion these 10 days of Bergolo changed the way I view screen time, social media and connection.

Nestled in the quiet hills of northern Italy, the village of Bergolo became more than just a backdrop — it became a home for our Erasmus+ exchange. While every moment was filled with laughter, learning, and discovery, what truly made this project extraordinary was the seamless blend of culture and collaboration.

Without a doubt, the incredible sense of unity and teamwork stood out the most. Participants from different countries, languages, and backgrounds came together like a puzzle — each person bringing a unique piece to complete the experience. Workshops turned into brainstorming hubs, challenges became group victories, and strangers quickly became friends.

The venue itself offered a perfect balance of serenity and inspiration. Surrounded by nature and history, Bergolo allowed us to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with each other. And none of this would have been possible without the flawless organization behind the scenes — every session, meal, and activity was timed and tailored to perfection.

But above all, this project reminded us that when people work together with open hearts, incredible things happen.
Grazie, Bergolo — you’ve left a mark on all of us.

This youth exchange was a fantastic opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and connect with many talented and interesting people of various backgrounds, with various skills and interests. It gave me the space to push myself and to explore the world around me with an open mind. I feel like I've learned a lot of useful skills, both thanks to the organized activities and from the people around me. The town where the project was set, a quaint village named Bergolo, provided me with breathtaking sights and a peaceful beauty that made my stay unforgettable. Those ten days in Bergolo, although intense and fast-paced, will forever stay in my heart.

I had the chance to take part in this project, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. What stood out the most was the amazing teamwork – in just a few days, we became like a family. The organization was great, the venue was cozy, and the atmosphere was full of energy and inspiration.

But beyond all the activities and sessions, what truly made this project unforgettable were the amazing people I met. I’m so grateful for the friendships I’ve made and the memories we’ve built together. Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey—you’ve made a mark on my heart. ❤️

We encourage everyone to keep an eye on our website and social media for upcoming short-term projects. Don't miss the chance to be part of these exciting opportunities!
