Around the world! - GeoGuessr Tournament

On the 7th of October we wanted to test our geography skills in a GeoGuessr-Tournament event. GeoGuessr is a geography online game where players see pictures of a random place in the world and try to figure out where on the planet they are, and we think the peoplereally liked it!

Not all of the participants were familiar with the game, so after a short introduction round we started with a quick powerpoint presentation explaining the rules and some strategies for the game. We showed some useful tips that could help players recognize countries, landscapes, roads, signs, and other clues.  And then we could start playing!

We tried different game modes and maps, to bring some variation to the game. This also meant that everyone had the chance to experience different types of locations and challenges instead of playing the same kind of round every time. The idea of the event was to show some impressions of interesting places all around the world, and luckily we made some really interesting discoveries like the “Hill of crosses” next to Šiauliai in Lithuania. It looked like a mystical place from a medieval movie and most of us never heard about it. It was especially interesting because it was not a typical tourist destination that we would have immediately recognized.  Also Neuschwanstein Castle impressed many of the players and definitely found its way on their “Germany travel list”.

In the end, after it was hard to find one single winner, we all shared the price, so everybody received some chocolate. All in all, it was a fun and entertaining activity, even if we didn’t have as much interaction with each other as usual because everybody was more focused on the game than talking. Still we had fun together and had a successful event! The tournament gave us a chance to learn something new, discover unusual places around the world, and spend some enjoyable time together.

We are also very grateful that the youth center made it possible for us to use the location.
